Jean Claude Gakwaya and co-driver Jean Claude Mugabo are aiming to score their first podium finish in the home round of the Africa Rally Championship, the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla rally.

The sixth round of the 2017 Africa Rally Championship will take course this weekend in the capital Kigali.

And Gakwaya whose best finish in the same event has been fourth position overall which he registered last year is highly optimistic.

“Our target is the podium. We think its the best position we should get from the home event.
“Last year we came closer but settled for fourth. So this year is so possible for us. We are familiar with the grounds and routes and that should be an advantage for us,” says Mugabo, Gakwaya’s co-driver.

Gakwaya and Mugabo are Rwanda’s former rally champions and they will be the main crew representing the host country. They will drive a Subaru Impreza.

“The competition will be tight despite the less numbers. Most of the crews cannot be undermined. But we shall still focus on the podium regardless,” he added

20 crews will be up for the 2017 Rwanda rally top spot.
